World drug policy commitments were discussed
The 67th session of the UN Commission on Narcotic Drugs (67CND), held in Vienna, Austria, from 14 to 22 March 2024, brought together more than 2500 participants to discuss world drug commitments.
During the high-level segment of this multilateral meeting, leaders from a number of international organisations and high representatives of countries addressed the issues raised in the session’s agenda. It includes the UN Secretary-General, the WHO Director-General, the presidents of the UN General Assembly, INCB, 67CND, the Executive Director of UNODC, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, as well as high representatives from around 100 countries.
The Deputy Minister of Internal Affairs of Turkmenistan noted in his speech the effective work carried out in the country to eliminate drug related challenges, the successful experience of the country in promoting international and regional cooperation, and stressed that the tasks ahead in the areas of interest will be actively followed up.
The high-level segment adopted the relevant Declaration. This document reviews midterm progress made in accordance with the Ministerial declaration of 2019 on strengthening actions at the national, regional and international levels to accelerate the implementation of joint commitments to address and counter the world drug problem. It further indicates the resolve to review in 2029 the progress made in implementing all our international drug policy commitments, and resolve to improve and accelerate their implementation in the period from 2024 to 2029.
Furthermore, the Commission apopted four resolutions, placed 23 new substances/precursors under international control, discussed relevant reports and, numerous side-events took place on the margins of the session.
The CND at its 67th session gathered officials of 140 Member States of the United Nations as well as representatives of 18 intergovernmental organizations, 141 non-governmental organizations, and nine UN entities.
