PRESENTATION OF THE SPECIAL UN PROGRAMS FOR THE ARAL SEA BASIN WAS HELD IN KAZAKHSTAN

On December 18-19, 2019, the Regional Conference "Innovative approaches and solutions in the system of sustainable water resources management and the possibility of their use in Central Asia" was held in Almaty.

The conference brought together more than 150 specialists in the field of water resources management; representatives of five Central Asian countries, government bodies authorized for water resources management, scientists, specialists, representatives of international financial organizations, employees of research institutes and universities took part in its work. A wide range of issues related to water management in the context of climate change was discussed.

The conference included the presentation of the UN Special Program for the Aral Sea Basin (UN SPAS). Participants were presented with the initiative of the President of Turkmenistan to create a UN Special Program for the Aral Sea Basin. The presentation was accompanied by a video presentation that visually presented to the audience the main steps planned by Turkmenistan, aimed at preparing multilateral consultations in the UN-IFAS format and launching a pilot project of the UN Special Program for the Aral Sea Basin.

The presentation emphasized the role of Turkmenistan as the country chairing the International Fund for Saving the Aral Sea and the importance of the upcoming multilateral consultations on determining the format of the future UN Special Program for the Aral Sea Basin (UN SPAS).
