Turkmenistan and IAEA Discuss Bilateral Cooperation in Vienna

Vienna, 15 September 2026 — On the sidelines of the 70th session of the General Conference of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Deputy Minister of Health and Medical Industry of Turkmenistan Azat Ovezov met with IAEA Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi to discuss the development of cooperation between Turkmenistan and the Agency.

The parties exchanged views on ongoing and prospective areas of cooperation, with particular attention to healthcare, strengthening the country’s regulatory infrastructure, and the application of nuclear science and technology for sustainable development.

In the area of healthcare, the sides highlighted Turkmenistan’s efforts to expand its cancer care capacity. In this context, Director General Grossi noted the forthcoming opening of a major new oncology centre in Turkmenistan, developed with IAEA support.

The discussions also covered cooperation aimed at strengthening the national regulatory infrastructure, as well as the use of isotope hydrology to support effective water-resource management and enhance water security.

The meeting confirmed the mutual interest of Turkmenistan and the IAEA in further expanding their cooperation and implementing joint initiatives in areas of shared priority.
