Turkmenistan supports international anti-corruption efforts
On November 9, 2023, the delegation headed by the Deputy Prosecutor General of Turkmenistan joined the twelfth session of the Assembly of Parties of the International Anti-Corruption Academy (IACA).
This multilateral meeting of the Academy was attended by representatives of countries around the world and partner international organizations at various levels. During the session its participants discussed the IACA activities as well as tasks, experiences related to the corruption prevention and the implementation of international standards in this regard. Her Excellency Ms Elena Maria Freije Murillo from Honduras was elected as Chairperson of the 12th IACA Assembly and the Academy’s 2024 budget was adopted.
In its speech, the delegation of Turkmenistan emphasized that the Turkmen side values active cooperation with the partner countries and international organizations in combating threats that impede human wellbeing and peaceful, sustainable development. Corruption is one of the obstacles to sustainable development, and therefore national and international experiences and mutual interaction are important to eliminate this negative phenomenon.
In this regard, it was noted that Turkmenistan is a party to a number of multilateral documents, including the UN Convention against Corruption. Consequently, effective practical measures have been carried out at the country level to prevent and eliminate corruption and ensure the implementation of the provisions of that Convention. Among them, it is worth noting the development of the Law of Turkmenistan on combating against corruption and its adoption on March 1, 2014, as well as the drafting of the National anti-corruption Program and its Plan for implementation for 2020-2024 and their approval on December 23, 2019.
As the main coordinating body in the fight against corruption, Prosecutor General's Office of Turkmenistan holds regular consultations with relevant state institutions and international organizations and continues to exchange experience.
Within the 12th IACA Assembly, the Head of the Turkmen delegation met with Mr. Yaroslaw Pietrusiewicz, Officer-in-Charge of the International Anti-Corruption Academy. The parties exchanged views on possible opportunities for further collaboration between Turkmenistan and the Academy as its new member.
